MSI RG60SE Wifi Router
MSI RG60SE wireless router review.
I bought one for fun - just to see what is inside and to try to play whit it.
Price ~ 35 Euros
This picture may confuse You - this device has only one antenna on its back.
What is inside of the box - router, ac adapter and antenna, also two pages of printed documentation and a disk.
NO LAN cable! So You need to make or buy one to connect the router for first time configuration.
RG60SE front panel.
On the back side of the RG60SE router we have 4 port switch, WAN port, power in, reset button, rp-sma antenna.
RG60SE Ac adapter - output 0.8A at 9V this is the ways better than dlink or linksys strange voltages.
And finally antenna - as I said reverse polarity sma - surprise was that this is at least 5dbi antenna - whit two metal tubes and a spring, if anyone need a dimensions I will post them.
Now the fun part - let see what we have inside !
According to the speed I suspected that this is atheros device but nobody can be sure until you open and see the board.
everything open
Here it is closer look - Atheros AR2318 soc chip, interesting because Atheros do not have this chip listed in their product line. They had AR2317 which is only 54Mb as speed and it is used in WRT54G 7-th version I thing.
Here is a link to the Atheros AR5007AP-G platform - AP61
The main difference between AR2317 and AR2318 should be only the speed this is often in their products.
Block diagram and reference board. RG60SE is very closer to the Atheros reference board.
RAM chip is a 64Mbit Elpida chip, model S6416AHTA-75-E - datasheet may be fount on the Elpida page : E0439E70_EOL.pdf
![]()
Another chip Marvell 88E6060 is used for the lan part. marvell.com LinkStreet_88E6060.pdf
Last thing is the flash chip -Spansion FL016AIF, I am not sure but this should be the datasheet : s25fl016a_00_c2.pdf
So this is all about the RG60SE hardware, You can find a lot of similar devices around :
Linksys wrt54g ver.7 uses AR2317,
So this is just a TP-Link router just neet to know which one???
Its 108mb wireless router so it must be TL-WR642G which have 3 hardware revisions.
Ver 3 has Intel flash so its defiantly not mine and it also support WDS function.
But this is for now - I still cant find LAN cable to connect to mine new router
T-link update firmwares www.everbesthk.com
Update and screenshots of RG60SE UI soon

What would be of interest for me is to know if this router can bridge two WLAN-networks or has WDS. I had been offered such a router but don’t know if it is suitable for what I intend to do: I want to connect a wired network trough WLAN to a Linksys WRT54GS.
Would be glad to get exact information about that. Even MSI has nothing about this router on his homepage.

Hi !
You may try manual for this router :
http://forum.msi.com.tw/bas/RG60SE%20User%20Guide.pdf
Or ask on http://forum.msi.com.tw
I am sorry that can give you answer, but i do not have way to test WDS now.

Hi,
I was wondering if WDS is real thing on that nice router - unfortunately, for mine answer is NOT. Therefore, I will have to let it go, and stay with mine Asus WL-520GC instead, even that I liked VERY MUCH interface of MSI, that is intuitive, clean, clear, powerful. In fact, this is first router of few, that passed trough me, having that good user interface. Congratulations, MSI (or whoever was behind that)! Also, antennae of this router is much bigger, than that of others, therefore, I suspect better reception. Clean, nice, serious looking router for its application. Looking forward for other models of MSI with similar qulities.

Seams to be an OEM product of TP-LINK. The ICs used and even board layout are exactly the same as my TP-LINK TL-WR641G. And it looks just like the first version of WR641G, only different in color. See http://www.tp-link.com/news/shownews.asp?id=1

Yes there are 3 hardware revisions of tp-link - so do no use firmware if you are not completely sure what are you doing.
Also You can find tp-link word in MSI firmware.
Thanks for comment - If you know more about different tplink firmwares or other similar products feel free to post more info.

Hi
I do not have router now but in manual is written :
Factory Default Reset button
There are two ways to reset the router’s factory defaults:
1) Use the Factory Defaults function on System Tools -> Factory Defaults page
in the router’s Web-based Utility.
2) Use the Factory Default Reset button: First, turn off the router’s power. Second,
press and hold the default reset button then turn on the router’s power, until the
System LED lights up (about 3 seconds). Last, release the reset button and
wait for the router to reboot.
Note: Ensure the router is powered on before it restarts completely.
You may try second option to reset your router to defaults.

So the conclusion? did you do a firmware update? I’m interested in the bandwidth limiting feature…
April 8th, 2008 at 10:22 pm
Sorry for a delay - I was not able to reflash this device
It is very similar to tplink devices but you must choose right firmware.
You must search for fonera+ experts or firmwares - BUT do not reflash unless you know and understend what you doing.

Is it possible to configure this router in a way that could allow having the VPN server in LAN?
Manual says RG60SE supports PPTP Pass-through but I was unable to successfuly route VPN traffic on 1723 port to VPN server’s IP address in my LAN.

Hi thanks for comments!
There is firmware for this router on msi forum : http://forum.msi.com.tw
I cant check file posted up as do not have this router but its good idea to reflash only if you have problems.
As I do not have this router I cant try vacarosie200 firmware.

does it support WOL packets to come from the internet and be broadcast to the LAN?
July 16th, 2008 at 5:36 pm
Please tell me if it’s possible to “alter” the mac address of this router in any way… it would really help!
Thanks and I hope you’ll answer!
